Do you know how to become a patent attorney?

I live in LA and am a software engineer major. I’ve been seriously considering if I want to become a patent attorney. I just don’t want to spend hours at my desk at the computer all day. Would the job entail being behind the desk all day?

Hmm, a software engineer who doesn’t want to be at the computer? :)

What you’d do at the start of your career could be the opposite of where you are a few years later. When you become a patent attorney your job will depend on where you work such as a law firm or for a large corporation.

If I thought I wanted to become a patent attorney, I’d go to the source. The great thing about job listings is that they usually tell you what you’d be doing. Start here.— Abby

How would I qualify to become a patent attorney?

When I finish my undergrad (biology), I plan to go to law school. I’d love to work towards a career with a Biotech Company and become their patent attorney. I think my Biology degree would be okay wouldn’t it? Do you see any downsides of working for a company rather than a law firm?

Since you’ve decided to stay in the Biology field, your degree is just fine. The only place that’s important is when you are ready to get a job. While in law school, you can take patent law classes (I’d assume they would be electives. You’ll have to do some digging to make sure that’s correct).

You might want to check The Jobs Report . I’m not sure if you’d go right into working for a company or if it’s best and even a requirement to work for a law firm first. — Abby

How much of a work load does a patent lawyer have?

Hi Abby. I know this isn’t your field but I’m really looking for an opinion. I’m married with 4 small children. How possible is it to become a patent attorney in a law firm and raise my family at the same time?

It’s probably safe for me to assume that a very good Patent Attorney working for a firm works much longer hours than one who works for a large company as their in-house attorney. I’d check the job board here, to see the hours expected.— Abby

My daughter thinks she wants to become a patent attorney, any thoughts?

She’s just finishing up her 3rd year in electrical engineering.

I see a huge need for patent lawyers! Pay isn’t bad either from what I’ve been told!— Abby

Going back to school. How hard would it be to become a patent attorney in a specialized field like medicine?

I just got out of the US Army and am going back to school. I know I want to be a patent attorney in the field of medicine. I just don’t know what to major in. Any idea?

If you’re talking about medicine meaning pharmaceuticals, I’d think a Chemical Engineering or BS In Biochemistry. If you’re talking about medical devices, then I’m GUESSING Mechanical Engineering would be your best bet. However, your VERY best bet would be to get with your adviser and hash it out. That’s what I would do.— Abby
