Patent Attorney Fees – Should You Bypass Them?

If you’re considering getting a patent on your idea, patent attorney fees or patent agent fees are a crucial step in determining how much help you’re going to get and how much money to budget for. Depending where you live in the U.S., patent attorney fees will vary. Patent agents typically charge quite a bit less and are considered a better choice for individuals. Because of the extra level of competition corporations have, they are typically better off with a patent attorney.

Patent attorneys in big cities like Houston, Atlanta, Los Angeles and San Diego will normally charge more that those helping people or companies in smaller cities, but that makes sense right?

There are no set patent attorney fees. When a patent law firm prepares and files a patent application, it can cost from $5K to $8K and with fees from the USPTO, the patent can end up costing up to $20,000 over the next 15-years. You’ll find some patent attorneys cost more and some less. The majority are in between.

To have protection internationally, an application will have to be filed in each country individually. There is one exception, the EU. Only one patent application will need to be filed there. How To Bypass Patent Attorney Fees

In many cases, it is possible for an individual to bypass patent agent or patent attorney fees. Businesses or corporations need to stick with patent attorneys for so many reasons. If you have invention ideas and want to patent your ideas on your own, you can do it as long as you’re willing to learn how to do it. I don’t know what the success rate of a patent attorney filing, but I’d imagine it’s pretty high. In addition to doing what they do very well, patent attorneys may be able to find other patents similar to the invention you’re filing for.

Patent attorney fees aren’t cheap, but there’s no better safety net for an inventor to have than a patent lawyer or agent preparing the application for them. Because a good IP attorney knows “the ropes”, your idea should be granted a patent using the most protected terms and in the broadest scope. That alone is well worth the patent attorney fees you’d pay. Figure on patent attorney fees being around $5K to 8K and less for a patent agent.
