It’s not uncommon to try and cut corners when considering filing a patent application. Doing your own patent search online is a great way to save a little money. In fact, no one should contact a patent attorney, patent agent, or patent assistance firm before they do their own patent search online.
There’s a difference though in cutting corners and cutting off your nose to spite your face. If you are a person who has great follow-through, determination, a knack for doing things right, and the ability to follow simple instructions, you can do a patent search online as well as save even more money in the patent process.
I’ve been looking around and found a site called ip.com that will research my idea. Do you know anything about them? Meaning, should I trust them? I have an idea that I’d like to patent and then sell to a manufacturing company.I want to bypass the lawyer fees. What’s the best way to do a patent search online
Hi Sandra. Have you called ip.com? They’d give you their prices I’m sure. I’ve heard of them and haven’t heard anything bad, if that’s what you’re asking. If you are short on money, you can also elect to do your own patent search online. It will take a little time and a few resources, however it might be worth it to you in the long-run
Forgive me if I’m wrong, but it sounds like you might be new to all this. If so, I have some suggestions.
Step 1. Go through the free 7-Part Patent Pending 101 Resource Guide. This guide will also have a section on help with your patent search online.
Step 2. Go through the free 7-Part Get It Patented Resource Guide. This guide focuses on what you can do after doing the preliminaries (from Step 1) like your patent search online.
Hope this helps!
